More information on this sconce

A Bulldog Wall Sconce That Holds Three Lights

The Gatekeeper is a bulldog wall sconce built as a sculpted head mounted flat to the wall, gripping three bulbs where you would expect a single shade. The fixture is the animal, and the light comes out of the front of it rather than through a diffuser. It stands 15.7 inches tall and is sold in black or white, both carrying the same three-light configuration. The rest of the breed range is in Pet Lighting.

Hardwired, Not Plug-In

This is the part most listings skip. The Gatekeeper is hardwired and AC powered: it connects to house wiring at a wall box, with no cord and no plug. Every large lighting retailer now runs hardwired-versus-plug-in as its own filter, which tells you how often people buy the wrong one. If the wall you have in mind has no junction box behind it, you are booking an electrician before you hang anything, so check that first rather than after. Plug-in pieces live in Lighting & Lamps.

Three Lights, No Dimmer

Three separate light positions run across the front of the head, and the fixture is non-dimmable. Wire it to a standard wall switch rather than a dimmer plate: a non-dimmable fixture on a dimmer circuit gives you flicker, buzz and a shorter bulb life. Full brightness or off, with nothing in between, which suits a hallway a good deal better than a dining room you want to soften. The free-standing alternative is Winston.

Black Or White, And What It Is Not

White shows the sculpting more sharply under warm bulbs. Black recedes into a dark wall until it is switched on, which is the more theatrical of the two. Same fixture, same three lights, either way.

What it is not

Not a table piece, not dimmable, and not something you plug into a socket. There is no base to stand it on and no cord to run. If you want a sculpted dog that sits on furniture instead, that is Duke.

Where It Earns Its Place

Hallways, stairwells and the wall above a dining sideboard, anywhere the light has to come off the wall because there is no surface to put it on. Mount it at eye level or a little above: the head is sculpted to be read from the front and loses its expression when it is hung high. Because it is hardwired, treat placement as a decision rather than an experiment. See it beside the rest of Cove Companions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do wall sconces have to be hardwired, or can they plug in?

Both types exist, and this one is hardwired. The Gatekeeper runs on AC power through house wiring, with no cord and no plug, so it connects at a wall box rather than a socket. Plug-in sconces are a large, separate category, and the major lighting retailers all let you filter for them, but this is not one of them. The wall you choose needs a junction box behind it.

Can I fit a light fitting myself?

If there is already a live junction box on that wall and you are confident working on house wiring at the mains, yes. If either of those is not true, no. This is a hardwired fixture, not a hook-and-plug job. Get the box confirmed before the piece arrives rather than discovering the problem with the sconce already unboxed.

How big is this bulldog wall sconce?

15.7 inches tall, mounted flat against the wall. That is close to the comparable three-light bulldog sconces on the market, which sit around 16 inches, so it reads at the scale most people picture when they search for one. It is a head-and-shoulders sculpture rather than a small wall lamp.

Does it come in black or white?

Black and white, chosen at checkout. White reads sharper against a dark wall and shows the sculpted detail more clearly under warm bulbs. Black disappears into a dark hallway until the lights come on, which is the more dramatic of the two. Same fixture and same three lights either way.

How many bulbs does it take, and is it dimmable?

Three bulbs, one for each light position across the front of the head, and it is not dimmable. Wire it to a standard wall switch rather than a dimmer plate. Putting a non-dimmable fixture on a dimmer circuit is how you get flicker and buzz, and it shortens the life of whatever bulbs you fit.

How much wall does it need?

At 15.7 inches tall it needs a clear run of wall roughly the height of a large picture frame, plus the sightline to be read from the front. Hallways, stairwells and the wall above a sideboard all work. What does not work is tucking it into a corner or hanging it above head height, where the sculpting stops reading and it becomes an awkward shape with lights in it.
