More information on this lamp
Two lights in one shade
Most cherry lamps do one thing. This one switches between a soft warm glow, which reads as an ordinary bedside lamp, and a deep red light that leans all the way into the cherry. The red does something the warm setting cannot: it saturates the glass so the fruit shape reads from across a room rather than up close.
Warm for reading and for a room you actually sleep in. Red for a night you want the object to be the point.
Frosted glass, not printed plastic
The body is sculpted frosted glass, so the light diffuses through the whole form instead of glaring out of one bright spot. Glass also holds the shape crisply, which is what stops a fruit lamp looking like a toy.
It has weight to it. That matters on a nightstand, where a light plastic shade gets knocked over by a phone cable.
Where a cherry lamp actually goes
Bedside is the obvious one and it is what most people buy it for. It also works on a shelf, a bar cart, or a desk corner, anywhere you want a small pool of light rather than room lighting. This is an accent lamp, not a reading lamp for a whole room.
If you are furnishing a room around it, the red setting is the one that changes the room. The warm setting simply lights a corner.
What it is and what it is not
Sculpted frosted glass with a cherry form, at $99.99. It is not a designer edition and we do not pretend otherwise. It is also not a $20 novelty light. It sits between the two, and the two light modes are what you are paying for.
It is decor lighting. It will not light a room to work in.
The rest of the cherry line
The cherry runs through more than lighting here. There are heels and mules with hand-set red crystal cherries on them, gathered in the red cherry shoes collection, and more lamps if it is the lighting you are after rather than the fruit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it actually change colour, or is it just red?
It does both. There is a soft warm glow that behaves like a normal bedside lamp, and a deep red setting that saturates the glass and makes the cherry shape the point of the room. Most cherry lamps on the market run one fixed colour, so this is the part worth knowing before you compare.
What is it made of?
Sculpted frosted glass. Glass is what diffuses the light evenly through the whole cherry instead of leaving one hot bright spot, and it is what gives the lamp enough weight to stay put on a nightstand.
Is it bright enough to read by?
This is accent lighting. It gives a small pool of light for a nightstand, a shelf or a desk corner. If you need to light a whole room or read for an hour, keep this as the second lamp rather than the only one.
Is it a night light for a child's room?
It can work as one on the warm setting, but it is a glass object rather than a toy, so it is not built for a room where it will get knocked about. Treat it as decor that happens to glow softly rather than as a nursery night light.
How does it compare to the cherry lamps at Urban Outfitters?
Theirs are the closest thing on the market and they are good. The difference is the second light mode and the glass. Most cherry table lamps in this bracket run a single fixed colour, so if the red glow is what drew you to the idea, check whether the one you are comparing actually does it.
